How your grade is worked out
Multiply each category's score by what it's worth, add those up, then divide by the weights that have a score. A category with no grades yet is left out, not counted as a 0, so the answer is your grade on the work graded so far.
Grade right now = Σ(weight × score) ÷ Σ(weights with a score)
Example class: intro psychology. Homework is 20% of the grade and you're at 92%, quizzes are 15% at 78%, and the midterm is 25% at 84%.
- 0.20 × 92 = 18.4
- 0.15 × 78 = 11.7
- 0.25 × 84 = 21.0
- 18.4 + 11.7 + 21.0 = 51.1
- 51.1 ÷ 0.60 = 85.2
Your grade right now is 85.2%, with 60% of the grade graded so far.
If the final is the other 40% and you get 80% on it: 51.1 + 32.0 = 83.1%.
Points instead of percents
If your class counts points, add up the points you've earned and divide by the points possible so far: 412 of 480 points = 85.8%. Switch the calculator to By points and type one total, or one row per assignment.
Points and weights give different answers when a category's share of the points isn't its weight in the syllabus. If your syllabus lists weights, use weights.
One test score
Divide the points you got by the points possible. 43 out of 50 is 86%. Each point on that test is worth 100 ÷ 50 = 2% of it, so a 2-point question is worth 4%.
On the common plus/minus scale (A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83), 86% is a B. Your syllabus may use a different scale.
When the weights don't add up to 100
Under 100: you're seeing your grade on the work graded so far. The rest isn't in yet, and your grade will move as it comes in.
Over 100: usually extra credit. Check your syllabus for how it counts.
Extra credit, dropped scores and rounding
Extra credit: enter it the way your syllabus does, as points added to a category or as a category of its own.
A dropped lowest score: leave that score out of the category by hand.
Rounding: the syllabus decides. Some classes round 89.5 up to 90 and some don't. The letter here only rounds if you tick "My class rounds .5 up" under More options.
This is math on the numbers you enter. Your syllabus and your instructor have the final word on how your grade is figured.
Next: what you need on the final
Once you know your grade right now, you can work out what you need on the final for each letter.
Then plan the days you have left. Several finals at once? Plan them all.
Questions
How do I calculate my grade with weights?
Multiply each category's score by its weight, add them up, and divide by the weights that have scores. Homework 20% at 92%, quizzes 15% at 78% and a midterm 25% at 84% give 51.1 ÷ 0.60 = 85.2%.
What if a category has no grades yet?
It's left out, and the result is your grade on what's graded so far. It will move as the rest comes in. The calculator names each category it left out.
Does extra credit count?
Enter it the way your syllabus does: as points added to a category, or as a category of its own. Totals over 100% are allowed and flagged.
How do I handle a dropped quiz?
Leave the dropped score out of that category. Grade Map in the app can drop the lowest score for you when it knows how many there are. It doesn't handle a final that replaces an exam score.
Why is my grade here different from the course site?
The course site may count ungraded work as zero, use a different scale, or round. Your syllabus and your instructor have the final word.
Does this save my grades?
No. The math runs in your browser. We don't save or send what you type. Visits to this page are counted the same way as every other page on the site, without cookies.
